How to opt-out from receiving credit card offers

Posted 27 November 2005, 17:52 in Personal Finance 2 Comments

A friend recently complained on how much junk mail/credit card offers she’s been getting in the mail lately. My response? I get no junk mail! It’s not because I have bad credit. Believe me, people with bad credit get credit offers as much as those who have good credit. It’s because I have opted out from receiving these type of mailings.

How, you ask? Simply go to OptOutPrescreen.com, which is a service run by the top 3 credit reporting agencies in the United States. By law, these credit reporting agencies are required to regularly scrub their list and remove those who ask not to be included on the list. So if you ask to opt-out, your information will not be sent to the credit card companies. It’s a very efficient system whereby you don’t have to deal with the credit card companies to opt yourself out.

Simply go to the website and click on the blue rectangle at the bottom of the site. There are three options: (1) Opt-In, (2) 5 Year Opt-Out, and (3) Permanent Opt-Out. I say use the permanent opt-out option as you will always have the chance to opt back in if you want to (though I’m not sure why you would want to).

Be prepared to give the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Birth

Once you have opted yourself out, be patient and wait a few months. By then you should notice a reduction on the amount of credit card offers. :)

  1. Thank you for the information. I am sick and tired of all these credit card offers that I get per mail. But now thanks to your post I know how to get rid of them, forever.

  2. That’s good that there is such a service. It’s so irritating to have so many credit card offers per mail all the time.
